Boer War Nurse

Janet Wyse Mackie Williamson

Lord Roberts Mentioned her in Dispatches on 4.9.1901 and in the same month, she was awarded the decoration of the Royal Red Cross (L.G.27.9.1901). The decoration was personally presented to her by King Edward the VII.

Thus she became the first New Zealand born and trained nurse to be honoured with this award.

This photo of Janet Williamson RRC, shows her wearing her RRC, QSA (Queen South Africa) and a gold and red enamel medal presented to her by the people of Otago in appreciation of her service to her country.
